MUSIC Zoran

Anton Zoran Music, Slovenian painter and engraver, was born on February 12, 1909 in Bucovica, a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After his studies in Maribor he enters the Academy of Fine Arts of Zagreb. His first exhibitions take place in Zagreb and then in Ljubljana in 1941. In 1948, Music participates in the Biennale of Venice for the first time. The same year, he meets Kokoschka, Tobey and Campigli who become his friends. In 1949, he creates his first engravings and lithographs which he prints himself using presses of the Academy. In 1955, his etchings are printed by the Atelier Lacourière (Paris) for the first time. In 1956, Music wins the Grand Prix of the Biennale of Venice for his engravings. He moves to Paris in 1959. From 1970 to 1976 he creates a suite of engravings and lithographs entitled "Nous ne sommes pas les derniers" which is a reminder of the tragic period of time he spent in Dachau. His artworks are permanently exhibited in the Dobrovo castle in Brda, Slovenia. Zoran Music died on May 25, 2005 in Venice.
