ARROYO Eduardo

Born in Madrid on February 26, 1937, Eduardo Arroyo escapes from the francoist Spain and settles in Paris in 1958. He is the main representative of the Narrative Figuration and of the New Figuration in Spain. In his work, there are militant (or at least hardly critisized) as well as more informal periods with a sense of humour and tender. When Spain turned back to the democracy, it addressed the contesting and accusing dimension of the pictorial model of Arroyo and marked an evolution in his perception of the idea of painting. He works with almost all the materials (collages, sculpture, lithography, engraving) which is a source of inspiration for oil painting. In 1997, Arroyo creates a suite of lithographs for the first 50 definitions of the Larousse dictionary, exhibited in 2012 for the first time. The engravings and the lithographs of Arroyo recall the collages of Picasso and comic strips at the same time, always with this touch of humour of the artist.
